Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre Gets Linear Winding Machine 

Capabilities for research into the design and production of future e-motors have been expanded at the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with the delivery from Winding Technology Ltd of a new linear winding machine. 

The AMRC recently acquired a WT500 linear winding machine from Winding Technology, funded through the High-Value Manufacturing Catapult and is available to the Future Electrical Machine Manufacturing (FEMM)Hub and industrial projects. Launched in 2019 and now with numerous academic and corporate research partners, the hub is growing to become a significant center for development of new electrification strategies for e-mobility. Partners from the outset include Rolls-Royce, Airbus, Siemens-Gamesa and GKN Aerospace. 

The new machine is capable of a range of winding schemes up to coil diameters of 500 mm with closed-loop tension control and process monitoring. Based in England at Honley in West Yorkshire, Winding Techology produces an extensive line of coil winding and other manufacturing machinery. 

Winding Technology also makes rotor banding machines for wrapping carbon fiber and glass tapes around high-speed permanent-magnet rotors. They are capable of winding multiple filament tows at very high tension directly onto the rotors or to produce sleeves to be pressed onto the rotor.
